How the inflation calculator works

The calculator compounds each year's consumer price inflation between the two years you choose. The result is the equivalent value: how much money you would need in the later year to buy what the amount bought in the earlier year. Purchasing power shows the opposite — what the amount is worth in money of the earlier year.

Data: World Bank, annual average consumer price inflation for 180+ countries, updated as soon as new figures are published (usually with a delay of about one year). Monthly official figures can differ slightly.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate the value of money after inflation?
Multiply the amount by (1 + inflation) for every year in the period. For example, 10% and then 20% inflation turns 100 into 100 × 1.10 × 1.20 = 132.
What is cumulative inflation?
It is the total price increase over the whole period, not the sum of the yearly rates — yearly rates compound on top of each other.
Which inflation data is used?
Annual average consumer price (CPI) inflation from the World Bank, the same series for every country so results are comparable.
