How the “what if I invested” calculator works
The calculator buys the asset at the closing price on your purchase date (or the next trading day) and values it at the latest price. Besides the profit and total return it shows the annual return (CAGR) — the yearly growth rate that would turn your amount into today's value — so periods of different length can be compared.
The comparison table runs the same amount from the same date through Bitcoin, Ethereum, gold, silver, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq-100. Results are in US dollars and exclude dividends, fees and taxes; past performance does not predict future returns.
Frequently asked questions
How much would I have if I had bought Bitcoin 10 years ago?
Choose Bitcoin, enter your amount and click “10 yr ago”. The table on this page also shows what $1,000 invested 1, 5 and 10 years ago is worth today.
What is CAGR?
The compound annual growth rate: the constant yearly return that turns the starting amount into the ending value over the same period.
Are dividends included for stocks and indices?
No. The calculation uses price changes only, so dividend-paying stocks and indices would have returned somewhat more.
